On the Friday before a three-day weekend,

when you discover that you get to leave work four hours early,

you make plans. Obviously.

First, you stop at Starbucks to visit Jackie and/or Emily (can't remember if they're both there on Fridays?) and get some hot chocolate, because it's surprisingly cooler than was expected today (good choice on the jeans rather than a skirt this morning).

Next, you walk 1.5 miles from the Starbucks at Faneuil Hall down to the Boston Public Library at Copley Square. It will look something like this:

When you arrive at the BPL, you don't go straight for the books (even though you want to). Instead, you go to the Changing Exhibits Gallery to see this:

Image via BPL.

After being inspired by printmaking, you browse the books. Also, you look for Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows on CD because they are no longer available via grooveshark. You might hit up the DVDs, maybe they have Anne of Green Gables? Or, even better, Liam Neeson movies! (Specifically, The Mission. Also, Taken.)

Once browsing has ended, you take public transit back home, where, if you were successful in your movie search, you take your laptop to the kitchen to watch a Liam Neeson (or Anne?) movie, put on stretchy pants and your Garamond T-shirt, take out your ink, rubber blocks, and printmaking tools, and attempt to recreate art you saw at the BPL. You might also paint with oils. It is quite likely you will accidentally paint the tiny kitchen table while doing so.

Hours later, when your roommate and her best friend arrive home, you realize you should probably stop making messes pretending to be an artist and actually eat a real meal. So you clean the table, wash your hands, and eat something before spending hours alternating between reading Howards End and watching either A Room with a View or episodes of How I Met Your Mother on Netflix, depending on how cultured you feel. Then you go to bed surprisingly early, considering the rest of the week.

And that's how you start a three-day weekend when you get to leave the office four hours early.

It's because I graduated

91 First Drafts

This was a freaking long time coming. But the book is gorgeous. Thank you, Calvin Olsen, for allowing me to use your Europe poems and photographs for my book design project. (Also thank you for putting up with my many rather short notice requests for hand writing samples.) I loved it all, even when I said I wanted to start a girl band (I'd be the drummer, since apparently I'm too small to play the bass). But you just want to see it, don't you. Ladies and gentlemen (Dan, are you the only gentleman who reads this?), I give you 91 First Drafts:

Front cover. (Please, ask about the birds.)

Back cover. Huge thanks to T.J., Sophie, and Lisa.

Title page.

TOC.

A section opener.

A spread with a poem and photo.

In deference to his career and the fact that these are drafts, I will not be posting any spreads that are readable. However, if you want to see them, email me and I'll hit you up with the PDF. Just be warned that if you attempt in any way to distribute said poems and Calvin finds out, you'll be hunted down by a man who ran with the bulls and lived to tell the tale.

I love this book. And everything about it. But I'm so so glad that I'm done.

End Scene

Just finished a 1700-word essay on Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Lowell, and Randall Jarrell, to be turned in tonight at 6 p.m. Last night, I sent the files for a 134-page book to a printer, to be delivered to me next Friday, and turned in on May 1.

There are no outstanding assignments in my academic career. I have completed everything. Everything.

Now I just need to return all those overdue library books so they actually let me graduate . . .

Saturday Checklist

(Because maybe if I post it I'll hold myself accountable.)

9:45 hair appointment.

Design at the BPL from the end of the hair appointment until 5:00. Will complete

  • all image correction and placement,
  • all front matter,
  • author page,
  • colophon,
  • final page count (shoot for 128, and absolutely no more than 140).

Practice duet at the church.

Shower.

Rephotograph maps and any titles that had to be rewritten. (Pray no more titles have to be redone, or I might be murdered by a poet. Edgar Allan Poe style.)

Read Robert Lowell.

Smorgasbord (always reminds me of Templeton)

So I'm down with everything except perhaps the pattern on pattern. Not sure about that. Weigh in?

March Madness. NC State! You were so close! So so sad when that didn't happen. Maybe even more than usual as it was nearly 1 a.m. Way too late to be watching basketball. (Also, did we all love the little Mormon who plays for UNC? Poor kid was tiny compared to everyone else on the court.)

All I want to do today is take Elizabeth Bishop and maybe W. H. Auden up to the Mount Auburn Cemetery. Instead, I'm avoiding finalizing the section openers for my book. I cannot find the right maps. Might just bag the maps altogether, but it's such a good idea. sigh. (girllookatthatbody)

Hellboy was on TV last weekend while I was designing. Really makes me want to watch Van Helsing. Super high quality films, I know.

This post seems to be going nowhere fast. End time? Yeah, how about it. Oy.

I'm Loving March, Reason #3

On Friday I purchased several tubes of oil paint, canvas paper, palette paper, four 6x6 canvases, and one 24x48 canvas all for the low low price of $30. Thank you, Craigslist. (Also C for sending me the link in the first place.)

Today I spent however long it takes to listen to Adele's 21 and Coldplay's Viva La Vida and Prospekt's March painting these:

Today is a good day for

My parents. Happy Silver Anniversary to you.

16 December 1986.

Dan. Happy birthday to you. Hope you don't feel too old; you are 27 after all.

Me. The semester is over, the magazine turned in. Only a few complaints about the printer. If you'd like to see it in its entirety, email me for a PDF. Here, we'll just admire the cover.

Get Back in my Life

So sorry about the lack of posts. I had so many things I wanted to tell you about, like

Meeting Stephen Pinker and Lois Lowry (wow!).
The best ice cream flavor at Cold Stone (Cookie Doughn't You Want Some).
Actually accomplishing a to do list.
My hunt for animal print (pun intended).
Expense reports are fun (what??).

But I'm designing designing designing with a few breaks for the flute for the next 36 hours. Instead, I'll leave you with a taste of the music that's been accompanying Lingo. Hands All Over, Maroon 5. Surprisingly excellent design music.

Now I should typeset Salman Rushdie

I'm realizing more and more how much type on a page means to me. I love stories, but I love them even more when they're both linguistically and visually beautiful.

All posters from spineless classics. Christmas gift, anyone?

And when it's cool type and Harry Potter, well then, I'm just in heaven.

All posters from The Modern Stylographer. Again, Christmas is coming.

I'm thinking Haroun and the Sea of Stories would make for an excellent typographical challenge. Of course, I should probably wait until I'm not killing myself with school and work.

Still, I love these ideas. And I love that I have the capabilities of creating similar designs. Specific text requests, anyone?

Saturday Afternoon

When the forecast looks like this . . .

And all you want to do is stay in bed watching your new trashy TV obsession . . .

The only cure is magazine designing out of the house with a lot of this . . .

Some of her gorgeous voice (possibly the sexiest voice a woman could have after Sophia Bush) . . .

And falling in love with their new album . . .

Designing

I keep talking about being swamped with work, specifically magazine design. So I thought I'd show you what I'm working on.

I'm creating a 24-page linguistics magazine. Going for a Psychology Today-vibe, not a scholarly journal. Language for non-linguists. This is the Q&A department for the back of the book (thanks, once again, to Charlotte for the term hideous editor):

Sukkot-a-palooza

Found this wicked awesome infographic created by Mike Wirth, and it was too cool not to share, especially since we're right in the middle of Sukkot. Seriously, my favorite Jewish holiday and pretty sweet design all in one? Yes, please.

Source found here.

He made a Yom Kippur one too. And Rosh Hashanah, and Hanukkah! This is so freaking sweet.

Photoshop Magic

I loaded CS 5.5 on my laptop yesterday. I've been playing with Photoshop, the one Adobe program I fear. But this whole color thing is kind of fun.

Photo of Florence, taken by poet Calvin Olsen. Hopefully he doesn't mind the repost.
With some color changes.

Sea of Galilee on Thanksgiving 2008.

Some color changes.

Dome of the Rock, 14 December 2008.

And some color.

A Love Letter to You

Darlings,

I woke up happy (which is much more than I can say for Monday morning). The pants I wanted to wear weren't wrinkled even though I'd left them in the basket with the rest of the clean laundry overnight, and my hair cooperated (mostly). I decided to start reading the Book of Mormon from start to finish on the T since I keep forgetting to download a new set of General Conference talks onto my iPod. It made the ride fly by. I feel like that's been happening a lot lately, I've really been enjoying studying the gospel more the last few weeks than I used to. I guess it's true that you get out of it what you put in.

On my way to my office I got a call from Thomas, who I love. And then I checked my email and found a very exciting secret that I can't yet share (don't worry, when I can you'll be the first to know). The Maine ads are so much easier than the North Shore ones from last week, and (thank heavens) my stomach doesn't hurt. I'm even hungry! That hasn't happened for four days.

Do you ever think about what songs would play in the background of your life? Today it's the soundtrack to (500) Days of Summer. It always is when I feel like this.

I get to read outside during lunch because it won't be too terribly hot, and class will be fun because we get to see everybody's book covers tonight. And can I just say, I know it isn't modest, but my cover is rockin. Want to see it?

Do you like it? I'm quite pleased. I've been continuously (continually?) surprised at how much I love design. I never thought I was a designer. But I could have spent hours last night making minor adjustments and double checking alignment and all sorts of things. When CS 5.5 finally shows up at my house I don't think I'll be sleeping as much, I'll get too absorbed in various design projects. But I don't love Photoshop as much as InDesign—I think it's that I like to work with the images and text, I like seeing the layout of a page. I like working the minute details of an end project. Really, I'd be happy to spend the day kerning. Crazy, I know.

One day until the weekend and only eleven days until my birthday, and I found out yesterday that the MFA is extending the Chihuly exhibit an extra day, so I'm going to go see it again (third time) on my birthday. And apparently Melis is getting me the best present ever. Even if she won't be planning a Super Awesome Birthday Party this year, I'm excited.

I love good days. I hope yours is wonderful, too.

Love,
Me

Typographical Love

Sometimes I wish I lived in a world that still uses letterpress, or even linotype. Is it ridiculous that I get giddy discussing serifs, x-height, weight, stroke, and kearning; that I love organizing typefaces into their different categories: Oldstyle, Modern, Slab Serif, Sans Serif, Script, and Decorative; that I am training myself to recognize not just typefaces, but fonts, by sight, and that I would love to learn how to set type even though it is a useless skill nowadays?

Seriously though, how can you not love designs like these?
